combinations is a method that will allow the drummer to approach the drumset differently than what he is presently doing - giving him endless ideas to play
combinations is a chart with a window showing the drummer four musical-notated strips with a quick writing system for notating those combinations that he likes
the musical strips have all the permutations of a given Topic
by following the instructions and manipulating the strips, combinations presents to the drummer limitless ideas / ways of playing behind his drumset
how to use combinations
Depending on which combinations Topic he is working on ( with either one or two viewable lines ) he would first play the line(s) shown in the window ( see left chart ). After he is satisfied, he would pull strip 1 up one measure and see that the one / two lines have changed ( see right chart ).
After practicing / playing the one ( two ) new lines he would continue this routine until that strip has been exhausted and would pull it down to it's original position.
Next, the drummer would pull strip 2 up one measure and repeat pulling up the strip until, it too, is exhausted ~ repeat with remaining strips.
Now the drummer could vary the routine to find very interesting ideas by simply pulling up one strip ie. strip 2 up 3 measures then repeat the preceding practice / playing routine.
